Michigan Schools CPR/AED Drill Week, February 3-7, 2014. Over the past several years approximately 30 Michigan school age children alone have died from sudden cardiac arrest. Studies have shown that early 911, early CPR, early defibrillation and early advance life support can help save lives. Michigan Schools AED Drill Weeks is a voluntary, grassroots effort to promote the importance of school medical emergency response procedures involving a potential sudden cardiac arrest thereby improving school safety, heighting AED Awareness, and helping to save lives. Michigan Schools AED Drill Weeks helps encourage AED Coordinators to conduct AED Practice Drill(s) during the designated weeks. It also gives administrators an opportunity to improve its program before an actual emergency arises. Visit www.aeddrill.com for more information.

Sports Brief: Heart Screenings for High School Students, Tuesday, October 15, 2013. In an attempt to detect heart abnormalities early, McLaren Northern Michigan and the Michigan Heart and Vascular Specialists will sponsor free heart screenings for high school students in grades nine through 12. The free screenings will take place in Gaylord and will include medical history, a blood pressure check, electrocardiogram (EKG), consultation with a specialist and an echocardiogram (ECHO) if required.
The Gaylord screening will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at McLaren Northern Michigan Specialty Clinic, 944 N. Center Ave. According to Ricci, the screenings will take less than an hour. He said warning signs of heart abnormalities teens should look for include chest pain during a physical event, light-headedness during activity and profound shortness of breath.
“Five to 10 percent of those screened will go on to get an ECHO and many times it’s nothing, but we have no authority to tell that student not to continue with athletics. We just have them follow up with their doctor and their information is sent there,” Ricci said. “But it will give parents and students a baseline for their health.”
